Grandpa NewMexiKen

NewMexiKen continues visiting three of the four Sweeties, going with the little ones and their parents Friday evening to play the ponies at the Charles Town Races (in West Virginia). Though spiffed up in recent years with a casino (that seemed to have more customers than the track), it’s still a great little place to watch the sport of kings.

A very small time gambler, I was out $1.80 at the windows for the evening. Mack, official oldest grandchild of NewMexiKen, did better, calling (and I swear this is true) the trifecta in one race.

(Lest you get the wrong impression, you must be 18 to wager in West Virginia. The children were simply spectators.)

Airport blogging

As advertised, the Albuquerque Sunport (our lovely little airport) has wireless service (as do an increasing number of our public libraries). NewMexiKen is sitting at Gate B10 before departing to visit three of The Sweeties.

Top search terms

In just one day yesterday, “Tami Maida” surged to the top of the search terms/phrases leading people to NewMexiKen. Sorry folks, the only reference here was for Helen Hunt’s birthday. Hunt played Maida in the 1983 movie Quarterback Princess, which was shown several times this weekend.

Ron Howard’s brother” (Clint Howard) remains popular.

Stupid dirty girl” is third. That’s the phrase used by California Education Secretary Richard Riordan.

It’s been a long time since Omarosa made the list.

Bloggers Suffer Burnout

From Wired News:

[J]ust one manifestation of a problem increasingly faced by popular daily bloggers: burnout. While they enjoy what they’re doing, many find that keeping up with the pressures to post regularly and to be sharp, witty and incisive is often too much.

NewMexiKen is rarely sharp, witty or incisive, but I know what they mean.

Several bloggers contacted for this story noted that their readers seem to look at their regular, consistent posting patterns as somewhat akin to a sign of physical health. And any break in that pattern is sometimes seen as a cause for alarm.

“I know that if I go more than about five or six hours without posting, or telling people that I’m not going to be blogging for the rest of the day,” said Reynolds, readers e-mail him and say, “You haven’t posted anything in five or six hours. Are you OK?”

Missing out on part of my allotted 15 minutes of fame

NewMexiKen left Albuquerque for Denver late Friday morning. When I checked my email after arriving, I was surprised to find a message from Jeremy Jojola of KOB-TV (the Albuquerque NBC affiliate). It seems Mr. Jojola wanted to do a brief on-camera interview on —

[W]hy you blog and who reads your site, etc. It’s going to be a fun story about bloggers in Albuquerque.

NewMexiKen was flattered but, of course, had to call Mr. Jojola to report I was 425 miles away.

The story on Albuquerque blogs ran during the 10:00 news and included a couple of views of this very page.

Today

It’s the date on which the Continental Congress approved a resolution declaring independence (1776) — the Declaration of Independence stating the reasons was approved two days later.

It’s the date on which the second day of battle was fought at Gettysburg (1863).

It’s the date on which Thurgood Marshall was born (1908).

It’s the date on which the Air Force says a weather balloon crashed near Roswell, New Mexico (1947).

It’s the date on which Ernest Hemingway committed suicide at his home in Ketchum, Idaho (1961).

It’s the date on which NewMexiKen’s computer continues to act up (2004). I fear hardware problems.

And it’s the date on which NewMexiKen is going off to visit one of the Sweeties (2004).

Blogging will be light (or absent altogether) until Monday or Tuesday.

Have a safe and happy Independence Day.

Today at least, the answer is, “No.”
