  1. Now wait a second…that’s not fair to Buster. For one, the throw from Kemp was from center, dead on and the catcher could receive it behind the plate. Buster received a throw from right and had to try to handle it at an angle AND in front of the plate.

For two, Cousins made the decision to go for collision to try to knock the ball out of Buster’s glove because it was late innings and knocking the ball out of the catcher’s glove meant the ballgame. (I’m not in the camp that says Cousins did anything wrong)

This play at the plate you linked to is from the *first* inning where this one run doesn’t decide the game.

This is A TOTALLY different situation….and not a fair comparison.

Buster did everything right. Legs were just not meant to bend that way. The next day the Houston catcher got himself in just about the same situation and is now also on the DL. Being a catcher is a rough gig.

  2. I too am a Posey (and Giants) fan Karen, and mourn Buster’s loss. But I think some of the credit for the play shown in the link above is due to Rod Barajas the Dodger catcher. He is clearly up the base path, giving Gonzalez access to the plate. Posey was on the plate and Cousins had no choice but to collide to score. Barajas had to reach to make the tag.

Perhaps as you say, it is where the throw went that placed the catcher (which is why I only give Barajas some of the credit), but I really liked this play. And I hate the Dodgers.
