“I come from a long line of Europeans — illiterate, mud-eating Europeans from the Outer Hebrides, to be exact, whose idea of a good time was to go down to the firth and watch the plague victims wash out to sea. Even so, I’ve always had an affinity for the Continent. Between New Orleans and Amsterdam, I prefer Amsterdam. I’ll take Rousseau over Jefferson, Beck’s over Budweiser, Formula One over NASCAR, and Heidi Klum over my knee.”
Update: Hmm, on second thought. The end of the line made me laugh out loud, but the more I think about it — the line, not the image — I find it a little too sexist.
So, first instinct, funny go with it, or second instinct, not up to the high standards of this blog — what do you think?
I’m agreeing with you on the sexist attitude. Uncool. Furthermore, our American girls are just as lovely.
I do think northern Europe is a superior culture, better to their own citizens than we are, but there’s always hope.
No problem with an affinity for Heidi Klum by the way. It’s “over my knee” that bothered me.
I’m a chick. I’m not offended. I laughed out loud.
If I “went that way” I’d take Ms. Klum over my own knee. She’s hot. 🙂
Of course, he’s just trying to be clever by continuing to use “over.” But I agree the spanking thing is a little bit gross.
I would have gone with “and Heidi Klum over and over.”

“STANDARDS? You wanna talk about STANDARDS??”
Last night NewMexiKen emailed Dan Neil and told him I liked the line, but . . .
I also sent along Jill’s version.
Neil replied. Said he “agreed” and thought her version “better.”
Yeah, the whole spanking thing … ewww … but I’m kinda also thinking, yeah, Dan, when you dream, go ahead and dream reeeal big. 😉
