Oscars 2008 — Best Supporting Actor

NewMexiKen is going to run a series of polls this week on the Oscars. Each will run for about 24 hours — the last for best picture will run a little longer. Not sure we can expect many votes in these polls, so yours will count all the more.

I’m a little uncertain how to phrase the poll. Part of me wants to ask “Who do you think should win?” But I’m going to start with “Who do you think will win?”

We’ll start with Best Actor in a Supporting Role. You do NOT have to have seen the films to vote. (I’ve seen just two of these performances.)

[POLL REMOVED. BEING CONSOLIDATED ON ONE PAGE.]

I will post the results as each poll gives way to the next. Sunday I will post all the results and my own picks — and invite you to post yours. The Oscars are awarded Sunday evening.

  1. Oops.

Jill is, of course correct and I have revised the poll accordingly.

My source when I originally posted the nominees had it wrong and I never noticed.

  2. The only other film I’ve seen Bardem in was Collateral and he was the bad guy who hired Tom Cruise in that one. Maybe Bardem can only play villains.

  3. I haven’t seen any of these movies, but I think Phillip Seymour Hoffman is a terrific actor, and I wouldn’t be at all surprised if he snagged the award. Of course, Hal Holbrook is probably due for the proberbial “Gee, let’s give this old geezer an award for posterity (while he’s still around)” sort of vote. Not to take anything away from Holbrook, mind you, as he is an actor of the finest sort, it’s just that the academy is known for that sort of sentiment.

  4. I picked Hal Holbrook before reading Debby’s comments but for the reason she cited. I think the academy also likes to throw in a surprise upset and will use this category to do so and honor Holbrook’s lifetime of contributions.

  5. The Academy definitely likes to throw those “lifetime achievement” awards around, but if they do it this year, its going to be for Ruby Dee for Best Supporting Actress.

I think you can bet your car on Bardem.

  6. Since today I am leaning toward “No Country…” as Best Picture, and I don’t think the votes will be clustered around one film, I have to vote for Tom Wilkinson. I thought his character was complex, and didn’t you just love him as a crazy, brilliant, decent lawyer? Javier B. was very scary, but the part wasn’t as challenging.

(Viggo M. had a more difficult role as a bad/good guy, but that’s another vote)

  7. I think Affleck’s age is a factor, but for the opposite reason as Holbrook’s: he’s young, there’ll be plenty of opportunities for this “kid” to pick up an Oscar in he future, etc.
