The Oldest Thing You Own

mental_floss Blog is asking for photos of the “oldest thing you own” for a feature they are working on.

But it got me to thinking: what is the oldest thing I own?

I have some petrified wood book ends from Arizona. The trees that produced the rock would be about 225 million years old.

I also own a family Bible published in 1844.

How about you?

  1. I have a book from 1502.
    A dated coin from 1429.
An ancient coin with Alexander III (The Great) about 330 BC. A trilobite fossile at about 550 Million years old. My oldest is several meteorite pieces. 4 Billion 600 Million years – the age of the Earth.

  2. I don’t really own it, because I gave it to my wife as a birthday present some years ago — a Civil War-era business directory of Salem, MA.

    It’s a long story. . . .
