Back when I was a magazine writer in L.A., working for a publication called Photo District News, I got to know a lot of old-time Hollywood photographers. It amazed how many of them had been combat photographers in World War II. Their stories were always the same: They came back from the war with a skill that they could use to make a lving, and they never wanted to photograph anything horrible again., so they went to Hollywood and took pictures of people and things that they knew, ultimately, didn’t matter.
