What makes a musician a greater American than an athlete?
In this case overall importance and lasting effect on American culture.
In general, an athlete’s accomplishments and importance to culture are temporary, specific to their sport, and have no lasting effect. Babe Ruth is an exception to this rule because was the biggest name in a sport that dominated American popular culture at the time. Jackie Robinson is another exception — for another reason. Few others are. We will have to see about Tiger, Brett, and Lance, but 50 years from now I doubt any would even be considered for a list like this (either a well done list or one like this).
But Louis Armstrong doesn’t play for Team Discovery Channel.
