    In general, an athlete’s accomplishments and importance to culture are temporary, specific to their sport, and have no lasting effect. Babe Ruth is an exception to this rule because was the biggest name in a sport that dominated American popular culture at the time. Jackie Robinson is another exception — for another reason. Few others are. We will have to see about Tiger, Brett, and Lance, but 50 years from now I doubt any would even be considered for a list like this (either a well done list or one like this).
