While campaigning for the presidency, Theodore Roosevelt was shot in the chest in Milwaukee on this date in 1912. He went ahead with his scheduled speech.

  1. And then, after he gave his speech, he was whisked away to a safe house in the woods of northern Illinois, which was — here’s the important part — right down the street from the house where I grew up.

    And when I lived there, that house gave the worst Halloween candy ever.

    It’s this kind of insight that makes history come alive, I think.
