All you current and former civil servants out there should find Armstrong to be your particular hero. The first man on the moon was a federal employee, a GS-14.

The hardest oldie to find — 96 Tears by ? and The Mysterians. This number one hit from October 1966 just does not seem to have ever made it to CD.
Anyone know differently? NewMexiKen is compiling iTunes playlists of various top 100 songs (Rolling Stone, Dave Marsh, NPR, Country America) and 96 Tears is essential.
And I liked it.
[Update: Found it.]
Garry Wills has an excellent review of Bill Clinton’s My Life in the current New York Review of Books, The Tragedy of Bill Clinton.
From the Santa Fe New Mexican:
A southern New Mexico rancher’s horse and spurs have become more than just cowboy gear in a federal criminal case accusing him of assaulting U.S. Forest Service employees helping to impound his cattle.
At an arraignment here Tuesday, prosecutors upgraded assault charges against 43-year-old Kit Laney to include assault with a deadly weapon.
The alleged deadly weapons? Laney’s horse, spurs and the horse reins.
Samuel Huntington is full of his usual nonsense:
America’s core culture has primarily been the culture of the seventeenth- and eighteenth-century settlers who founded our nation. The central elements of that culture are the Christian religion; Protestant values, including individualism, the work ethic, and moralism; the English language; British traditions of law, justice, and limits on government power; and a legacy of European art, literature, and philosophy. Out of this culture the early settlers formulated the American Creed, with its principles of liberty, equality, human rights, representative government, and private property. Subsequent generations of immigrants were assimilated into the culture of the founding settlers and modified it, but did not change it fundamentally. It was, after all, Anglo-Protestant culture, values, institutions, and the opportunities they created that attracted more immigrants to America than to all the rest of the world.
After a long discussion of his thesis, followed by a description of the problems of Mexican immigration, Huntington concludes:
The continuation of high levels of Mexican and Hispanic immigration and low rates of assimilation of these immigrants into American society and culture could eventually change America into a country of two languages, two cultures, and two peoples. This will not only transform America. It will also have deep consequences for Hispanics–who will be in America but not of the America that has existed for centuries.

How can one man be so narrowly focused? Ever heard of Santa Fe (1608) or New Orleans (1718) or African-Americans (1619) or American Indians? Diversity is the soul of America.
was found dead on this date in 1962. She was 36.
According to Joe DiMaggio biographer Richard Ben Cramer, after Monroe’s marriage to Arthur Miller had ended, she and DiMaggio had reconciled — the Kennedys notwithstanding. By 1962 they planned to re-marry. The wedding was set for Wednesday, August 8, 1962. Very private, very hush-hush.
Five days before the wedding date, on Saturday night, August 3, Marilyn died, a presumed suicide. (According to Cramer, no coroner’s inquest was held.) Marilyn Monroe’s funeral was August 8, 1962.
NewMexiKen posted an entry on the cause of Marilyn and Joe’s initial break up last January.
Of course, Bobby Kennedy was in Los Angeles at the time of Marilyn’s death, so maybe …
Bruce Springsteen has some words:
A nation’s artists and musicians have a particular place in its social and political life. Over the years I’ve tried to think long and hard about what it means to be American: about the distinctive identity and position we have in the world, and how that position is best carried. I’ve tried to write songs that speak to our pride and criticize our failures.
These questions are at the heart of this election: who we are, what we stand for, why we fight. Personally, for the last 25 years I have always stayed one step away from partisan politics. Instead, I have been partisan about a set of ideals: economic justice, civil rights, a humane foreign policy, freedom and a decent life for all of our citizens. This year, however, for many of us the stakes have risen too high to sit this election out.

Think again. Walter Mossberg isn’t impressed:
I’ve been testing the system in a $54,000 BMW 330Ci convertible, lent to me for a few days by BMW. I have tried several different iPods in the car, including a brand-new, fourth-generation model. My conclusion: The BMW iPod adapter works, but in a pretty crude way that will likely leave the iPod cult hungering for more. It’s a decent first step, but that’s all.
*****Still, the BMW setup was far less distracting and ugly than my normal system: an iPod stuck to the dashboard with Velcro, plugged into an audio jack with a Radio Shack cable, and connected to my cigarette lighter for juice.
Update: Today’s New York Times has an article on the various means of connecting an iPod to your car stereo.
Marcia Brady (Maureen McCormick) is 48 today.
From AP via the Los Angeles Times:
Kobe Bryant’s prosecutors said Wednesday he will be put on trial later this month, even as attorneys for the woman accusing the NBA star of rape suggested her participation is not a sure bet.
Attorney John Clune said his 20-year-old client will have to talk with prosecutors about whether she will go ahead with the criminal case. He said she fears the recent release of court documents that refer to her sex life threatens her chance of getting a fair trial.
Wait, isn’t it the defendant who is supposed to get a fair trial?
From the Los Angeles Times:
Denying gay couples civil marriage violates their constitutional rights, a Washington state judge ruled today, a day after voters in Missouri approved a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriages.
“The court concludes that the exclusion of same-sex partners from civil marriage and the privileges attendant thereto is not rationally related to any legitimate or compelling state interest and is certainly not narrowly tailored toward such an interest,” Judge William L. Downing of King County Superior Court wrote.
He stayed his ruling pending review by the state Supreme Court.
From the Los Angeles Times:
Inadequate wages and benefits force workers at Wal-Mart stores in California to seek $86 million a year in state aid, according to a report released Monday by the UC Berkeley Labor Center.
Moreover, if other retailers cut their wages and benefits to the levels offered by Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the cost to California’s public-assistance programs would rise by $410 million annually, the study said.

At Slate, William Saletan thinks it’s Kerry’s race to lose. (Though, as he admits, he thought Bush was toast with similar numbers four years ago.)
Ever heard of Dave Chappelle? NewMexiKen had but still couldn’t place him. He has a show on Comedy Central and just resigned for an estimated $50 million.
“Chappelle’s Show” has become an important series for Comedy [Central], scoring a trio of Emmy nominations last month and ranking as the highest-rated cable program for the network’s demographic sweet spot, men 18-34, who comprised much of the 3.1 million total viewers the series averaged in its second season.
The ratings for “Chappelle’s Show” not only held up well in reruns, but boosted other longtime Comedy staples including “The Daily Show With Jon Stewart” and “South Park” — not to mention the network’s strong primetime performance in the first and second quarter of the year.
Guess I’d better start watching.
Interesting case. The woman, a Catholic, was fired by a company for eating pizza with ham and a BLT.

From report in the Santa Fe New Mexican:
Pulido said the Kerry and Edwards families will spend Saturday night in Albuquerque, where they plan to attend Mass and go shopping Sunday morning. There are no scheduled public events in Albuquerque, he said.
Maybe Clinton told them about La Hacienda.
