NewMexiKen expects to return February 5th or 6th.
There may be tweets during my R&R.
Update
Nothing is fixed, although I do understand a little more about the underlying problems and shutting the site down for 30+ hours was helpful in that regard.
The simplest solution is to start over with an empty blog. Not certain I’m willing to do that.
Other than that, every once in awhile I just need a couple of days break.
Here’s the latest tweets. Some of these links were pretty interesting.
- Joe Paterno's final days; the ex-Penn State coach was not bitter http://t.co/DWOMNuIK As always, Posnanski puts it best.

- Willard Romney made $380,354 in 2010.

Announcement
It seems NewMexiKen has gotten too big for its server.* It is so slow, especially in the mornings when I try and do most of the writing, that I can no longer stand it. Perhaps 20,600 posts is too many.
Time to pull the plug — and start over.
In the meanwhile I think I will take a break of undetermined length — a day, two, a week, two weeks. Who knows? I always miss it when I’m gone.
In a day or two I am going to take the whole site down. While it is down, the URL will transfer you directly to my Twitter feed which will remain active.
Eventually, I’ll be right back here at NewMexiKen.com with the same old wisdom, whimsy and wit.
If you have any suggestions for what you want to see more of — or less of — please feel free to make a comment or email me at newmexiken at gmail dot com. Maybe 8-1/2 years is enough. Maybe I should just do history or national park stuff.

* Technically the hosting service is throttling the domain because NMK is using more than its share of the server.
‘Tis the Season
To visit Sweeties.
That means little if any blogging. Some tweeting.
Have a safe, wonderful and happy Christmas.
Need Advice
Gmail thinks this is spam, but I don’t know. It seems sincere to me.
What do you think?
Dear Beloved,
I am Mrs. Wand Smith an aging widow suffering from long time illness. I have some funds I inherited from my late husband, the sum of US$12,400,000.00 and I needed a very honest and God fearing person who can use the fund for charity work in any part of the world, I found your email address from the internet and decided to contact you. Please if you would be able to use the funds for the charity work, kindly reply back immediately for further details.
Yours in the Lord,
Mrs. Wand Smith.
Not to harp
You can follow my tweets in the sidebar.
I tweet something every once in a while, but mostly it’s retweets of stuff clever people have tweeted.
Best line of the day
“Miss Larry King. He would’ve had Jermaine Jackson, Ryan Seacrest and Cher on tonight to talk about Libya and the quake.”
BTW, this post is somewhat of a milestone.
(That’s an average of 6.8 a day for eight years and 20 days.) |
God’s Blog
My Pride and Joy
The blog is 8 today. Here’s Stevie Ray to help me celebrate my Pride and Joy.

Eight
This blog is eight years old today.
Why bother?
I see Garret’s and Avelino’s and Elaine’s photos and I think, why bother.
I post about politics for 8 years and a regular reader thinks I could be a “right-winger” — or just stupid — and I think, why bother.
I spend an hour on the birthdays and almost no one ever says a thing and I think, why bother.
I see today’s top NMK search terms — ron howards brother, ron howard’s brother, omarosa nude, ron howard brother, sleeping bear dunes national lakeshore — and — after 19,819 posts — I think, why bother.
No I am not quitting and you don’t need to comment — in fact I’ve turned off comments for this post. It’s my blog. Just let me vent.
Although I wonder, why bother.
An even idler thought
I see (down in the footer) that this blog has now published more than 2 million 2 hundred and 10 thousand words.
That’s like 25 nonfiction books — in eight years.
Sure, I know, I’ve used a lot of quotations. And, I know, there are the repeats.
Still.
Seeing and Making Comments
If you wish to comment or to see what others have said, you have three choices.
- Click on the post title. That will open the page for just that post.
- Click on the little balloon to the right of the post title; the balloon that’ll have a number in it if there have been any comments. That click will take you directly to the comments section on the page for just that post.
- But, easiest of all, click on the Show Comments (or Leave a reply) link at the bottom of every post. That will open the comments form right there before your very eyes.
BTW, I’ve made the appearance cleaner as that works best, especially on mobile devices such as phones and iPads. A few longtime readers have told me that it’s too plain. Thoughts?
Idle thought
I am considering moving most of my “linkage” posts to Twitter. The longer stuff (which has become less frequent I admit) would still be posted here.
Any reaction? Anyone care?
My next vacation
. . . is now my current vacation.
Blogging will be limited until April 2nd or 3rd.
