An even idler thought

I see (down in the footer) that this blog has now published more than 2 million 2 hundred and 10 thousand words.

That’s like 25 nonfiction books — in eight years.

Sure, I know, I’ve used a lot of quotations. And, I know, there are the repeats.

Still.

  1. One of the interesting things about blogging is that, over time, you really do create a body of work. It documents interests, creative evolution, and personal change, just as any great amount of writing over time does.

A few years ago, academics discovered that some long-running sitcoms do that same thing: taking characters over a long period of time and allowing them to evolve. It is, by any reasonable definition, literature.

I think, at some point, some Eng Lit grad student is going to pick a couple of blogs and study them the way they study the works of great writers. Assuming a reasonable choice of blogs, it would be an entirely valid exercise.

Nice work, Ken. My wife an I enjoy your stuff. You bring things to us that we wouldn’t have seen or thought of otherwise. That is, in the words of less sarcastic people than I, enrichment. So thanks.

  2. I am duly impressed. I rely on NMK to keep me entertained and informed on a myriad of subjects, especially since I don’t have TV, watch news, or surf the web for informative sites on my own. My days would be a lot emptier without this blog.

  3. 2,000,000 of anything is impressive, Ken, and you’re still going strong like a Volvo engine. Congrats on reaching this milestone

  4. Perhaps its a sign that you should write an actual book, perhaps largely of the material you’ve already created for this website.

I know that, before moving to NM, I read this site and very few others (i.e. johnfarr.com) to get a better sense of the place, and to decide in which part of the state I might wan to live. Maybe you could compose something interpreting this foreign land to the rest of the country.
