James Stewart was born 103 years ago today. Stewart received five best actor Oscar nominations in his long career, but won only for The Philadelphia Story in 1941.

Joe Cocker is 67. Timothy Olyphant is scowling at being 43.

Cher is 65.

Charles Lindbergh departed Long Island for Paris 84 years ago today.

Amelia Earhart took off from Newfoundland for Ireland on May 20th in 1932, the first woman to solo the Atlantic.

  1. Amelia Earhart wasn’t just the first woman to solo fly the Atlantic – she was the second person to do so. That is a big reason why she is so admired. No men were willing/able to duplicate Charles Lindbergh’s feat for five years. She was a protofeminist

Of course, mostly she’s famous because she eventually disappeared off the face of the Earth. If you follow aviation news, you’re aware that they may be very close to solving that mystery.

  2. Ken – I always read your history dates and anniversaries, but this Lindbergh one stands out. That achievement must have been bad ass in its day. I enjoy walking into the Air and Space Museum in D.C. and seeing right above the door the Spirit of St. Louis, Yeager’s Bell X-1, and now Rutan’s SpaceShipOne. It’s a badass hall of fame. Those three, and Ms. Earhardt, and several others of course were/are a breed of Americans with some serious determination and cajones.
