In a similar vein, when my plans to attend the U. S. Navy’s 100th Anniversary of Flight were disrupted here in San Diego I was left scrambling for a way to participate remotely.
To put this event in perspective, http://www.signonsandiego.com/:
“In a masterful bit of choreography, exactly 189 aircraft were brought together in cloudless skies above San Diego Bay Saturday to celebrate a century of naval aviation in the city where it was born.”
So four hours of Naval aviation flying directly above the bay in an unprecedented historical sequence of aircraft gathered from all over the nation starting with a reproduction of the first aircraft of naval aviation, the Curtiss A-1 Triad and culminating with a flyover of the entire air wing of the USS Stennis – the largest flyover since WWII.
My local newspaper had reporters blogging and tweeting from the multiple fields being used for hosting the aircraft, the center stage of the flyover, and NAS North Island where 200 aircraft were on display.
My local AM radio had a play-by-play of the aircraft flying over, retired Navy pilots, and WWII veterans who actually flew the aircraft.
So an event bigger than Macy’s Thanksgiving and the Rose Bowl rolled together – I expected my local television to be doing local color, coverage of aircraft that may never fly again and certainly not together, at least a misbegotten crowd interview.
Nada.
60 seconds on the Evening News about how bad the traffic was.
