I understand the performer’s urge to “make the song their own.” But if ever there were a song that the perform should avoid trying to make their own, it’s The Star Spangled Banner. Seriously: just sing it. By doing that, it is likely that the song won’t drag on, causing the excited stadium to grow restless when they should be attentive, and it decreases the chance that the performer will lose track and forget the words.
Also, I think someone should do some reporting on how the singer-of-the-anthem is chosen for the Super Bowl. It’s clearly a deeply flawed process, and those make great stories.
