I have similar problems with two of my alma maters: Indiana University is neither The University of Indiana nor U of I (that is The University of Illinois). The University of Chicago is not The University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). One of the U of C’s former presidents would always pronounce it “THE University of Chicago” much like Buckeyes say THE Ohio State University to distinguish the school from Ohio University, or The Little Sisters of the Poor.
