I was taught to type two spaces after each sentence, and only one after a comma. If it wasn’t done that way, they took points off our typing score. It was also emphasized in Journalism. It’s been a hard habit to break, and I still tend to use two spaces. One space just looks so crowded after doing it the other way for 45 years. Now though, with things like Facebook limiting space, I tend to use one in there. In the final analysis, I try at least to be consistent. Either one space, or two; never a mixture.
One is correct. Two is incorrect.
Unless you are using a typewriter.
I went to Two Space Rehab a couple years ago. It was a VERY difficult habit to break.
It was hard to let ol’ Two Space go, but I’m a stronger person now.
I’ve been doing it wrong? Who knew? I shall now recapture the wasted space and feel self-satisfied.
Tomorrow.
I think a better rule, which takes into account the reasoning behind the change to 1 space is to use 1 space when working in a proportional-width font, and 2 when using a fixed-width font. Old typewriters were all fixed width.
If you’re putting text into a word-processor, you are almost certainly using proportional width, so the rule stands. Me, most of my writing is adding comments to computer programs, so I’m working in fixed width maybe 90 per cent of the time.
Really now. What the hell difference does it make? Are we going to run out of room?
I’m a liberal and I’m going with 2 spaces everywhere and every time.

Typical liberal. Waste, waste, waste.
