Wow. I’ve used one in the past five minutes. Truly impressive.
An even more impressive line I thought:
“He [John Pope] spoke of his acquaintance with the public men of the State, and said he could get them to recommend me for a position and he would do all he could for me. I declined to receive endorsement for permission to fight for my country.”
I had always heard Grant’s memoirs were remarkable and have been meaning to read them for many, many years, but somehow just never did until I began today. I am to the days just before the War. So far, they are absolutely wonderful.
Wasn’t Samuel Clemens his publisher?
