Tucson seemed like a small town today, not the city of 1,000,000. Everyone I know shares a very hollow, sad, and perplexing feeling.
Being a Pima County native, I am so proud of our long-time sheriff, Clarence Dupnik. In today’s press conference, he stated what so many people are thinking (talking heads and politicians inciting this type of action). Even if this atrocity did not occur because of the vitriol, he mentioned, what Sheriff Dupnik said needed to be said.
We Americans have a duty to to go to the mirror and take a good look.
”This has not become the nice United States of America that most of us grew up in and I think its time we do the soul-searching,” he said.
“The anger, the hatred the bigotry that goes on in this country is getting to be outrageous and unfortunately, Arizona has become the capitol. We have become the mecca of prejudice and bigotry.”
All of my Tucson friends are feeling so devastated and awful about what happened there. They are also singing praises of Sheriff D. I like what he had to say.
Atrocity.
Yep.
I’m so sad that this happened in my birth city. I know that violence like this doesn’t represent the people I know in Arizona.
But along with the bad was something awesome. Three citizens “subdued” the gunman as he fired on Saturday – including a 61-year-old woman who ran up to him and grabbed first his empty magazine and then his new, full, magazine as he attempted to load it in his gun. I mean, that is seriously bad ass. You don’t get ladies like that everywhere.

And this hero had already been shot!
