When doing a set of shows back in the early ’90’s, I was stuck in the DW Buena Vista Palace for a month, with only one ‘dark day ‘ (one free day). After a month of Disneyfication, I would stand backwards in the elevators, so I didn’t have to see Mickey’s face. I put the Mouse phone under the bed. I even looked out the window of the 20-something floor I was on, saw a small pond with an alligator in it, and thought “How perfect, how REAL it would be to jump, break all my bones and be eaten by an alligator.”
DW makes you crazy. I was certifiable after working around the place.
I hate Orlando with a passion.
Please don’t get me started on Disney. My old friend Leesa worked for them after graduating from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena (it is required by law), and LORD, does she have some stories.
As regards the elementary school musical, I think I would make a $500 donation to a school lacking textbooks for its students in the name of the school putting on $13K plays and send them a note letting them know I’ve done so.
The Disney empire is like Walmart. It seems like a good idea, but there are consequences.
