Of the 30 major league teams, the six without the name of a city are:
Arizona Diamondbacks
Colorado Rockies
Florida Marlins
Minnesota Twins
Tampa Bay Rays
Texas Rangers
True, Tampa is the name of a city, but Tampa Bay is the name of a bay.

I was thinking the Washington Nationals. Technically, Washington isn’t a city, right? It’s Washington D.C.
Technically the District of Columbia is correct, but in everyday usage (and historically) it is Washington, with a mayor and wards and all that citified stuff.
But good catch Lucky.
I got all NL teams. Guess which league I’m a fan of.
I think the New York Mets are named after the state, not the city.
Also, I’m confused: there’s a comment button at both the top and bottom of each posting. Does that mean I have to post each comment twice?
Yes.
Actually, no.

No.
If your comment is that good, yes.
Actually I think Jim Morrison put it best:
Comment me two times, babe
Comment me twice today
Comment me two times, babe
‘Cause I’m goin’ away
Comment me two times, babe
One for tomorrow
One just for today
Well, you could think of the Tampa team as the “Bay Rays,” kind of like bay scallops.
I’m in the Washington-not-a-city camp. I’m also in the Washington-not-a-baseball-team camp if you exclude Walter Johnson of course.
I worked in Washington for 15 years and it sure seemed liked a city to me.
No – I mean ‘Washington Nationals’ doesn’t really designate a city. Without the ‘D.C.’ it reads more like the ‘Capitol Hill Nationals’.
KevinB — I don’t understand.
At one time there was a Washington City. It and Georgetown and some others were part of the District of Columbia. In 1871 they were combined as one entity, so it became technically just the District of Columbia. But saying Washington isn’t a city seems to me like saying Brooklyn wasn’t a city when the Dodgers were there. Yeah, true, it is really part of New York City, but . . .
Haha – Not trying to get under your skin Ken. Just agreeing with the other poster that it would seem there are 7 teams without a city in their name rather than 6. A subjective point not worth arguing about.
I’m not arguing. Just trying to explain why you are wrong. 🙂
