San Juan Island is well known for splendid vistas, saltwater shore, quiet woodlands and orca whales. But it was also here in 1859 that the United States and Great Britain nearly went to war over a dead pig.
We spent our 25th wedding anniversary there (6 years ago). It was spectacular. After a beautiful trip crossing the sound on a ferry, we flew on a small plane (5- or 6-seater) from mainland Washington over several islands to San Juan. It was a clear day, and flying that low, the views were outstanding. We also went out on a boat and saw some whales, as well as dolphins, countless eagles (including nestlings), and all sorts of other wildlife and spectacular scenery…. we even saw Tom Cruise’s magnificent get-away house from our boat. (I’m not that ga-ga over celebs; I just thought I’d throw that in.) It’s one of America’s premier spots, to be sure.
