“Nine years later, the main fact of our lives is the overwhelming force of unreason. Evidence, knowledge, argument, proportionality, nuance, complexity, and the other indispensable tools of the liberal mind don’t stand a chance these days against the actual image of a mob burning an effigy, or the imagined image of a man burning a mound of books.”

Is this perhaps veering ever so slightly toward the view that all religion amounts to insane, made up bullshit. The concept of faith as it relates to religious belief is a bug not a feature. Believing things that couldn’t possibly be true is regarded as a psychotic state except where religion is concerned. We look at Scientology as insane rantings but what gives the Book of Mormon, the Bible and the Koran their free pass on insisting adherents believe things that are not true? Even stranger, we call this state of psychosis, piety, and assign it a positive social value. By our own standards we should venerate the 9/11 terrorists, the Koran burners and Yitzhak Rabin’s assasin as folks who took their beliefs to their natural conclusions. Thankfully we don’t, so on some level we recognize as a society that a person can have “too much religion.” maybe we are headed in the right direction.
