  1. We’re more concerned with rattlesnakes and mountain lions in our neck of the woods–oh, and javelinas that gore the dogs.

  2. While we were parked at our friends house in Red Lodge, MT, a black bear ate our Thule rocket box. My insurance agent back in Iowa was incredulous.

  3. What did I tell you…. I just went to put on a new-used saddle and blankets on my paint horse, to see if they fit OK before I decided to buy them. I had Kenny put the blankets on while I held the saddle. He put the first one on, then the extra pad on top, and before adding the saddle, I paused to ask, “Did you check the blanket to make sure there aren’t any stickers in it?” He pulled it back off and held it up to look at the bottom side that sits on the horse. Lo and behold, there was a big old scorpion about two inches long pressed against it! Three cheers for female intuition (and natural caution, because there’s a reason for that saying about burrs in saddles). That could have been a major incident about the time I cinched up the saddle–or worse, mounted–and pressed some weight against the scorpion. At least you see bears coming. (By the way, the scorpion was probably from our shed, where we kept the saddle and blankets overnight, because it wasn’t on there when we bought it home.)
