Best line of the day

“[T]here is no substitute for reading, and there never will be. Hearing something aloud is its own experience, but it’s hard to beat sitting in bed or in a comfortable chair turning the pages of a book, putting it down, and eagerly awaiting the chance to get back to it.”

Woody Allen

  1. They keep trying to say that books (and by association, libraries) are doomed in this electronic age, but I believe this is the very reason why “they” are wrong.

  2. I love reading, and books, as much as anyone. And, personally, I have no desire to use a Kindle or iPad to read.

But technology is pervasive, and I have no doubt that the clock is running out on books as we know them. Convenience trumps tradition, as we’ve seen many times. And the kids in preschool right now – who’ll never write a non-electronic letter, use a pay phone, flip through a card catalog, watch a TV show in real time, or wonder what today’s weather will be – will have no emotional tie to paper books.

It’s sad, I know. But I fear it is inevitable.

Think of all the trees we’ll save.
