The Gospel of Awesome

At The Book Bench at The New Yorker Deirdre Foley-Mendelssohn lists some of her favorite awesome moments from The Book of Awesome:

-When cashiers open up new checkout lanes at the grocery store.
-Hitting a bunch of green lights in a row.
-Bakery air.
-Waking up before your alarm clock and realizing you’ve got lots of sleep time left.
-The smell of crayons.
-Finally remembering a word that’s been on the tip of your tongue for so long.
-Putting potato chips on a sandwich.
-When you nudge the person snoring next to you and it makes them stop.
-The shampoo head massage you sometimes get at the hairdresser.
-Moving up a shoe size when you’re a kid.
-The smell of books.

  1. Moving down a dress size when you’re an adult.

    Riding a galloping horse.

Ice cold Coke from an 8 oz glass bottle on a really hot summer day.

  2. Pure mountain spring water.

    Arizona Sunsets.

    Purring cat.

    Homegrown tomatoes.

An actual letter or card from someone you care about.

    The first-position A-minor chord on a steel-string guitar.

    Wild huckleberries.

  3. Hitting a baseball/softball in that *sweet spot*

The smell of fresh tortillas and roasting green chiles.

Jump/hopping between cars on a train.

    New Mexico Sunsets.

    Infectious laughter.

  4. I’ll say it… the act of making love.

A wonderful bottle of Chateauneuf du Pape or Champagne.

Descending a mountain on my bicycle at 100 kph.

Cuddling my wife in the morning whilst sleeping in.

    A damn good chimichanga.

  5. A long, hot shower with really awesome water pressure. One of the best inventions EVER!

Clean body, clean hair, and a freshly made bed all in the same night.

Having an infant fall asleep on your chest.

And yes, the smell of the desert after it rains. I got to enjoy that one this evening when I stopped at the rural mailboxes on my way home from work.
