Yes, you are in the right place for NewMexiKen. This is an experiment in change.
From 1732-1758 Benjamin Franklin published annually Poor Richard, An Almanack. Richard — Richard Saunders — was, of course, a pseudonym for Franklin himself. “Poor” in the context of 18th century publications promised silliness, perhaps even vulgarity.
After six years and two months of publishing NewMexiKen — and more than 16,200 postings — I wanted to try something a little different. I doubt there will be much change from NMK — it’ll still be half wisdom, half whimsy and half wit — but maybe out of respect to our inspiration this site will improve without really being different.
And didn’t Franklin preach self-improvement?
[Note: Poor Kenneth was consolidated back into NewMexiKen on February 12, 2010.]
I like the new look!
Looks fantastic! Congratulations! I’m in the midst of reading Middlekauff’s “The Glorious Cause”, and I know that you will be as successful and eloquent (and prolific!) as Franklin.
FRESH! I love it. 🙂
the speed of dark is the sam as the speed of light, it’s just right behind light
I like the pictures of the commentors. This will probably keep me from thinking of SnoLeopard as a woman, though you never know.
Whoa, I like it!
Ken,
Great new site, though you know I would have loved for you have kept the back content…
I must be a retard, it seems that you must be going through a midlife blogging crisis, or is it my crisis? I will learn how to navigate your new site. Thanks for all the hard work.
Ken- I’m a fan of change. Since I use RSS, your new layout won’t matter much to me. However, “poorkenneth.com” is not an improvement over “newmexiken.com,” which had a great sound and conveyed some of your whimsy. The old domain name conveys a sense of place, yet anyone can ‘get’ the wordplay in ‘newmexiken.’ The play on ‘poorkenneth’ is much more of a stretch and will make some think of Kenneth the Page. My 2 cents. peace, mjh
The site has had several makeovers during its six-plus years, though this is the first name change (and first URL change since 2004). The likelihood of a revision was announced in August (NewMexiKen: Plans).
I wanted something with more visual impact. I wanted to feature certain stories and topics to differentiate the better posts from the stream-of-consciousness stuff. I wanted the site to be a little more magazine like than it was as a long column of posts. (This design is a compromise on that latter point.) I wanted more page views (though the full posts are still to be found at the RSS feed).
I would appreciate folks telling me what they like or don’t like about the change.
I no longer apologize for changes, for saying I’m quitting, for actually quitting or for quitting the quitting. That’s just me.
