Best 'apple a day' line of the day

“Red Delicious, which is to a fruit bowl what plastic surgery is to beauty, is still the most popular apple — a polished piece of fruit that can keep its buffed pose year-round in near-freezing warehouses, but is utterly tasteless.”

Timothy Egan blogs about the harvest.

  1. Tomorrow morning Pla and I will go to Portland Nursery’s annual apple tasting where we will be able to try free samples of 51 varieties of apples and 15 varieties of pears.

Then we can buy our favorite apples and pears for $0.89 a pound ($0.99 for Asian pears).

Many of these trees are available to purchace but I don’t know where we’d plant them.

For years I’ve considered planting a starkrimson pear tree but it won’t produce fruit unless there is another one pretty near.
