Today, as noted below, is the 100th anniversary of Leo Fender’s birthday.
We honor him by citing Rolling Stone’s The 100 Greatest Guitar Songs of All Time.
The top 15:
- Johnny B. Goode, Chuck Berry
- Purple Haze, The Jimi Hendrix Experience
- Crossroads, Cream
- You Really Got Me, The Kinks
- Brown Sugar, The Rolling Stones
- Eruption, Van Halen
- While My Guitar Gently Weeps, The Beatles
- Stairway to Heaven, Led Zeppelin
- Statesboro Blues, The Allman Brothers Band
- Smells Like Teen Spirit, Nirvana
- Whole Lotta Love, Led Zeppelin
- Voodoo Child (Slight Return), The Jimi Hendrix Experience
- Layla, Derek and the Dominos
- Born to Run, Bruce Springsteen
- My Generation, The Who
“Smells Like Teen Spirit” and “Born to Run” in the Top 15, are you kidding me?
I try not to weigh in on these kinds of list because having a top 100 is ludicrous anyway. But this top 15 is absurd.
The folks at Rolling Stone take themselves far too seriously.
