It was great fun, that image showing one Coca-Cola logo over the years to all those Pepsi logos. Except, well, it wasn’t totally accurate.

I was one of thousands who mentally called almost-bullshit when I saw that many vs. one comparison, but I do think the almost is important. Coke’s brand has been exponentially more consistent than Pepsi’s over the decades. Pepsi rebrands itself every time the wind changes direction, almost always with disastrous results.
That comparison came on the heels of the Gatorade “G” debacle, in which sales have dropped 17% since the rebrand. Before that, this. Before that, this.
PepsiCo’s CMO has finally resigned, but it’s doubtful, of course, that they’ve learned anything. Looking back, it becomes clear that they simply can’t stop themselves.
It’s a problematic behavior that seems to plague No. 2s.
It may have something to do with Coca-Cola being a soft drink company and PepsiCo also owning Tropicana, FritoLay, Quaker and Gatorade. I am of the observed opinion that successful companies are often those that have retained their core identity (run more by product people than finance people).
You know, when I saw that logo comparison, I thought “hey, I’ve seen other Coke logos than that”. Glad to know I wasn’t losing my mind…at least not on that topic, anyway.
