Idle thought

All this talk about 60 Democratic senators, filibuster-proof and all.

Does anyone know, when did we last have a filibuster? I can’t remember one. Isn’t this all 99.9% talk?

  1. Since the year 2000 there have been no Senate term with fewer than 49 filibusters. A filibuster is the best way to insure that NOTHING happens on a give bill or proposal. Of all the things that the Senate does, nothing, it seems, is what they do best!

  2. Thanks. I did my homework after your comment. Senate Rule 22 now permits procedural filibusters. A senator doesn’t have to actually hold the floor by speaking for hours (days) as in the past. They just file a motion to filibuster a bill. The Senator (after getting his or her way presumably) can withdraw the motion or the Senate can vote on cloture to end the filibuster.

I was aware that there haven’t been any marathon speeches and so assumed filibusters were more threat than real. I was mistaken.

  3. Thanks Ken, you made my point beautifully! Now, they doing even have to do anything at all other than say there going to do it.
