    DO lemmings migrate, and in response to periodic environmental pressures unknown to man – do they commit mass suicides by throwing themselves into the sea?

  6. I am unsure why the lemming question was tossed at me but I assume it has something to do with Disney movies. I have never bought the “lemmings to the sea” theory except when I read about 100 car pileups on freeways! Whether they migrate or not, I have no idea. Or care.

    I was taking your comment seriously.

    A Disney producer came out years ago, after producing the “documentary” on lemmings in which they filmed the periodic lemming rush to the sea. Problem was they were on a tight schedule and couldn’t actually wait for the lemming migration trigger.

    So they rounded up a bunch of lemmings, fired up the cameras, and started pushing lemmings off the cliff for posterity.

    ‘cept it turns out it was a myth, and lemmings don’t actually throw themselves into the sea. Ever.

    But we raised an entire generation (or two) that “know” lemmings mindlessly congregate for mass suicide.

    Hence the expression.
