Disturbing, yet this really doesn’t make sense. When you think about the various scenarios, I suspect the newsmen may have been doing something to incite this response.
The only ‘threat’ I could see in this video, is that the newsmen (and others) parked in the lefthand breakdown lane, which, when added to idiot people walking around and rubberneckers on a highway with flowing traffic, makes for a very dangerous situation. Reason enough to ask them to move, and should have been on the newsmen’s minds as they stood there arguing.
The policeman could have told them that, and they would (one would hope) comply and move the truck.
Yet the cop breaks down and arrests them, sitting them against the guardrail in front of the truck, which would put their lives at graver risk in that traffic/accident situation. So the cop ends up with the truck still there, and two immobile bodies in the way.
Like I said, makes no sense.
The newsmen persisted in baiting the angry policeman, which makes me wonder if they tried to pop over the fence. Makes more sense, that way.
As soon as the cop started to crawl over the fence, I would have exited stage left. Soon as a policeman’s angry, you don’t push your theoretical rights … you get out of there and discuss your grievance with a lawyer.
Basic rule of survival: Don’t argue with a mad-as-hell guy with a gun, who believes he has the power to make you act the way he wishes.
Nothing ever gets settled on the side of the road.
1st lesson I taught my boys.
Got an issue with law enforcement, settle it in front of the judge – not out in the sticks. Out in the sticks it is HIS ass on the line, nothing you can do but make that worse.
Alongside the road it is “Yes sir, No sir, I don’t know sir”.
And don’t do anything fast.
And their father leads by example. mostly.
Funny how few problems with law enforcement you have with that litany.
The cop was way out of line. There’s a fine line between cops and criminals. Most cops today are simply bullies or criminals with government authority to victimize people. Sad.
I take exception to your “most cops today,” Jim. There have always been some bullies among police, but I don’t believe it’s ever been most.
