… really ought to be a national holiday. Today in person (and in spirit for those of us who have already voted) as many as 140 million human beings will have a shared experience. What could be more celebratory?
God bless America.

That’s why I love WhyTuesday?
We should vote over the weekend (both days), and Ken, you’re right: it should be a national holiday. People shouldn’t have to choose between their job or their vote.
When I lived in Michigan, we had the advantage that the UAW negotiated a standard contract that had election day as a holiday. Suppliers, like my company, followed suit. I don’t know how many used it to vote … I think many called it hunting day. In 2004, I got up off my sick bed and stood in line for 2 hours to vote. I simply wouldn’t have made it, had I needed to wait the 6 or 8 hours that other people endured.
With the problems in the auto industry, that holiday is gone after this year.
I was listening to NPR while driving home this evening. A reporter was telling a story about a lady in Santa Monica who was in labor at the polling place but wouldn’t leave before she voted. She was moved to the front of the line.
I didn’t here what happened after that.
