Once the largest army post in the southwest, Fort Union is now little more than a shadow of its former self set among beautiful grasslands north of Las Vegas, New Mexico. For 40 years in the second half of the 19th century, it was the Santa Fe Trail equivalent of an interstate truck stop and regional warehouse.
Alas, NewMexiKen found his Nikon was in need of a charge. These photos were taken with my iPhone.

You missed a great opportunity to add (Costco) at the end of the first paragraph.
fort union is a great place to visit i live just south of ft. union and visit it often. We did a reinactment in august and was disapointed to find it made no news papers or anything. We ( my children and myself ) had a great time and cant wait till next year to do it again I have pictures but i dont see a way to post them or i would.
Based on this post Mary and I took a day trip to Fort Union. A place that I had never heard of. I thought you might be interested in our photos of the place.
Thanks for the idea.
