You people are so boring

… that after two-and-a-half years without cable TV I’ve ordered DirecTV (and Qwest Fiber-optic internet). You’ll miss me when I’m a couch potato instead of a blogger.

I had to renew my vehicle registration this month. Every year I just renew for one year instead of two because I figure I’m due — now after seven years — for a new car. (I had the last one seven years before I got this one.) Anyway I went over to the air inspection place, got the necessary inspection, came home and registered the car online. Altogether, 30 minutes — it was 3:14 when I left and 3:44 when I started updating this post.

Registration in New Mexico is $51 a year (unless you have a special license plate). There are no other taxes or fees for cars that I know of. How much do you pay?

This plate is $37 extra. I think about it — and then figure, who cares.

  1. Yeah….I miss the NM registration fees.

My car is a 2001. California assesses fees based on the value of your car.

My last registration was $145. And that’s purty darn near cheap around here.

When I moved here, they used to assess a penalty for bringing a car from another state. My registration was $300 and the penalty was $200.

$500 to register my car about made me pass out. I’d paid $40 that year in NM.

  2. New York charges by weight – I think it was about $65 to register my car for two years, which isn’t bad. But there is also a vehicle use tax of $30, so that about evens us out with NM.

Sorry to be so boring, NewMexiKen. I assure you I’ve been reading avidly.

  3. I can’t type lying down. 🙂

P.S. The edit comments feature seems to be broken so I’m removing it until I figure out why. Sorry. If you make a horrible mistake, send me an email and I can correct it because NewMexiKen is all powerful.

  4. In Virginia, it’s $40.75 for one year.

But, we also have personal property taxes, yearly safety inspections, and emissions inspections. So, the registration may be cheap, but it’s just one of many costs.

  5. In Texas it’s priced according to the year of your car or the weight of your truck. Mine is about $65 for a renewal. And yearly you also have a safety and emissions test which is another $40. The emissions testing is only in those counties that have an abundance of pollution. Texas does not have a personal property tax or a state tax. Texas makes up for it with a property tax and a higher sales tax.
