Asdrubal Cabrera catches Blue Jays’ Lyle Overbay’s line drive, steps on second to force out Kevin Mench (running from second and not seen in the video) and tags Marco Scutaro (running from first) for an unassisted triple play.
It was just the 14th unassisted triple play in major league history; only seven have been turned in the last 80 years.
Some points of interest (since I’m a sports junkie and all).
There have only been 17 perfect games in Major League Baseball history; an unassisted triple play is even rarer.
Only fifteen players have hit four home runs in a game.
Last night on “All Night with Jason Smith” on ESPN Radio, Buck Showalter recounted a reported triple play where no fielder touched the ball when he was managing in an extended spring training game.
There was a runner on first and second, and both went at the pitch.
The hit was an infield fly (one out), the first base runner passed the second base runner (two outs) and the ball came down and hit the second base runner in the head (three outs).
