A poem should be palpable and mute
As a globed fruit

Dumb
As old medallions to the thumb

Silent as the sleeve-worn stone
Of casement ledges where the moss has grown –

A poem should be wordless
As the flight of birds

A poem should be motionless in time
As the moon climbs

Leaving, as the moon releases
Twig by twig the night-entangled trees,

Leaving, as the moon behind the winter leaves,
Memory by memory the mind –

A poem should be motionless in time
As the moon climbs

A poem should be equal to:
Not true

For all the history of grief
An empty doorway and a maple leaf

For love
The leaning grasses and two lights above the sea –

A poem should not mean
But be

  1. Johnny Unitas was born on May 7, 1933, so the possibility of a May 7th holiday is not out of the question.

Update: And Karen! Definitely we ought to have a May 7th holiday.

  2. Hey! I was born on this day too! 🙂 Can I get a vote for National Holiday??

You know, when I was a kid, I always thought it was so cool that I shared a birthday with Domenici. A nationally known New Mexican! Now…eh, I’m not so sure….

Tho I’m in good company with Gary Cooper and Eva Peron.

I also always liked that I was born the day after Willie Mays. Ol’ number 24 and I will have something to talk about when I get a chance to meet him. Notice I say “when”…he’s often at the games in SF. Been close but no cigar…yet.
