The first Olympic torch relay was for the Olympics in Berlin in 1936, so I guess we can stop worrying about the current relay being sullied by politics.
I saw this mentioned at Daily Kos and did some homework to verify it.

The Olympics is more than an opportunity to display international harmony. It is also good because it provides a low stakes way to air grievances that can be finely graded from protesting during the torch run to skipping an opening ceremony to boycotting the games.
In addition, the Olympic establishment has been over time about the most conservative group of old f*rts around and particularly deserving of being annoyed.
