The Definitive 200

“The Definitive 200 is a list of 200 ranked albums that every music lover should own … celebrating classic recordings by favorite iconic and contemporary artists.”

I believe I’d seen this list before but passed it by until today. NewMexiKen certainly likes music lists and maintains several in iTunes, but they are almost always lists of single tracks, not albums. That’s because I am a child of Top 40 radio and grew up listening to singles, not albums. Nevertheless The Definitive 200 is a pretty interesting list.

The list was compiled by NARM, the National Association of Recording Merchandisers, in cooperation with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

  1. It shows just how out of touch NARM is that they (and Rolling Stone) continue to put out this drivel, which consists of the same artists year after year. More Baby Boomers yearning for their lost youth. If they’re so good at merchandising recordings, haven’t they realized that people don’t buy albums any more. And me telling a 16-year-old that they’re not a “music lover” (whatever that means) if they don’t have the Footloose soundtrack is completely laughable. The most recent recording on the list is from 1991! That 16-year-old wasn’t even born when Nevermind was released. I might as well tell them that Mario Lanza is on the list. The top 10 is also 32 men and one woman. Please.

  2. 70 of the 200 albums post-date 1991. You are right about the Footloose soundtrack though.

  3. How about Mozart? Chopin? Beethoven? Frank Sinatra? Hank Williams? Mel Torme? Patsy Cline?

What if the NAFFR (National Association of Fast Food Restaurants {Ok, I made that up}) came up with a list of places every true food connoisseur should eat in, including Wendy’s, KFC, White Castle and Burger King? Should that be taken seriously?

It’s a thinly veiled marketing ploy.

  4. Well, I don’t agree with everything on the list, but there are certainly some real classics there in my opinion.

  5. Of course, some Republican blogger out there will look at the inclusion of the Dixie Chicks and immediately state that this list is nothing more than an additional proof that “teh liebrulz” run the media.

  6. So when I alphabetize my collection of the “greatest albums”, it goes: Beastie Boys, Beatles and then Beyonce, right? And then my 3 Dixie Chicks albums go after The Doors, not before The Clash. I hope I can get it right.

  7. Sorry, Ken, I need a fact-checker. I meant to say that only one of the top 10 are post 1991. SnoLeopard is exactly right, because it must be less expensive for idiot conglomerates to flog their back catalogue than to actually spend some money promoting new bands.
