Dan Neil’s review of the Mini includes this:

“The Mini is diamond-laced Champagne, a piano-playing Shetland pony, sex on the wing of an airplane. Simply put, if the Mini Cooper doesn’t put a smile on your face, you’re dead.”

Abqjournal used to print Neil’s weekly culture column. He is a delightful, brilliant writer. Those columns stopped abruptly last summer, I think, and I haven’t found them online. Has anyone else? Neil is great enough to make even a car review worth reading, but I’d rather read his thoughts on more than cars. peace, mjh

Neil won the Pulitzer for distinguished criticism in 2004.

Neil does a column in the Times Sunday magazine called “800 Words.” Here’s the latest: The Look of Love.

An excerpt:

The question is why? Why do beautiful women get together with unbeautiful men? The subject has aroused academic scrutiny lately, and I can only surmise it is due to recent prominent cases of what I’ll call beauty asymmetry. The American analog to Sarkozy-Bruni is Dennis Kucinich and his ravishing redheaded wife, Elizabeth, who is 31 years younger, half a foot taller and seemingly of an entirely different species than the congressman from Ohio. Science wants to know, and we do too: Just how the hell does that happen?
