The photo of General Washington was taken in the Donald W. Reynolds Museum and Education Center, an excellent new addition at Mount Vernon.
The Functionally Ambivalent family was at Mt. Vernon in October, an enlightening trip that has caused and outburst of Washington Biography reading and bad jokes about Mrs. A — who reads herself to sleep at night — “going to bed with George.”
All of that said, the porch at Mt. Vernon overlooking the Potomac is surely one of the most wonderful porches in the world. It’s easy to imagine President Numero Uno parked there, sipping an after dinner Madeira and trying to figure out a way to get out of going to the Constitutional Convention.
Joseph Ellis’s His Excellency: George Washington is good. So is David Hackett Fischer’s Washington’s Crossing.
What do you recommend Mrs. A?
Oh, yes Tom, you are so very right about that porch. It really speaks volumes about the man that he left it at age 57 to go be president for 8 years.
Every summer, there are week-long summits for teachers sponsored by the educational department at Mount Vernon. The teachers actually get to stay on the grounds at Mount Vernon. I recently spoke to a woman who was there last year. She said the best part was that every evening they were allowed to sit out on the porch drinking wine and watching the river. Pretty cool!
