Good points

The BCS did not choke away a national title berth against a four-touchdown underdog the last night of the season. The BCS did not lose to Oklahoma, rise all the way up to No. 1 — then lose to the Sooners again.

The BCS did not lose on its own home field to Stanford. Or Arkansas. Or South Carolina. Or Illinois.

The BCS did not lose 48-7 in its showcase non-conference game.

The BCS did not win its first 11 games against a bunch of nobodies, rise to No. 1 in the country, then lose in its first and only marquee game.

The BCS did not soar to No. 2 in the standings, then implode upon losing its starting quarterback. The BCS did not give up 473 yards to Texas Tech — then blame it on losing its starting quarterback.

Stewart Mandel

Mandel does blame the BCS for the unappealing match-ups that resulted, however.

  1. Why are they afraid of a playoff? Excuse me, but at 11-2, LSU doesn’t belong when there are teams with better records.

  2. I dislike defending the BCS, but they have published the procedure — two polls at 1/3 each and the computers for the other third. It’s up to the voters and the computer programmers to chose the criteria. The season’s body of work, not solely the W-L record, is what they use. LSU lost twice, but in triple overtime each time. That’s arguably 11-0-2.

Hawaii should have gotten a shot just to honor an undefeated team, but surely you don’t think Hawaii or Kansas are as good as for example, Virginia Tech or Oklahoma?

Our own favorite conference the Pac 10 is the biggest single obstacle to a better system. Them and the Rose Bowl committee (which isn’t a football-oriented group).

  3. I argue 11-2 is not 11-0-2. A loss is a loss. What would keep LSU from loosing in a semifinal game in triple overtime? Why is it that in every other NCAA team sport there is a playoff? Let ’em WIN the championship. In intercollegiate sports especially, the better team doesn’t always win, the winner wins.

Enough opinion and statistical determination, let ’em play!
