I got nothing.
Last night I did watch the first three episodes ever of the HBO series The Wire and find myself hooked. Disks two and three are on their way from Netflix and I’ll probably watch the first three shows again tonight.
Also, I finally got around to seeing Volver, the film that won Penélope Cruz an Oscar nomination, and The Last King of Scotland, the film with Forest Whitaker in his Oscar-winning portrayal of Idi Amin. Both films were superb — indeed, Whitaker was really just remarkable.
Haven’t paid much attention to fall weather elsewhere in the country, but Albuquerque officially hasn’t reached freezing yet. October 29th is the average date for the first frost. We’ve had no measurable rain for six weeks.
Mental Floss has the date covered: Condi Rice, Joe McCarthy & Prince Charles Were Born (and other things that happened November 14).
The Wire is by far the best show on TV now and could rank among the best shows of all time. It’s not just hyperbole when I say that — I truly believe it. The writing, acting and cinematography are top-notch, rivaling (and indeed besting) many movies.
But you have to watch every episode in order to get what’s going on. And while there may be some loose ends… they’ll all get resolved in time. I really, truly, love that show.
I agree with LP. The Wire is absolutely the best show on television. I also agree that watching the episodes in order is necessary or else the impact of subsequent episodes won’t be as significant.
I watched the first season, shows 1-3 last night. I watched them again — and enjoyed them even more — again tonight. And now I’m watching the pilot once again with the commentary by David Simon.
I recently watched season three of Deadwood on DVD, having not seen it before, but having watched the first two years avidly. I repeated each disk (that is, watched each episode twice) before I returned the DVD. These shows are like tapestries. There are too many things you miss with just one viewing.
