Most indicative line of the day, so far

“It’s six in a row retired by Beckett — tailing fastball to Gutierrez. (Pause) I said six in a row — that’s ten in a row. One more time, the third time’s the charm — nine in a row retired by Beckett.”

—Tim McCarver last night

300 million people in this country and Tim McCarver is covering baseball’s premier games.

  1. And enough with the “on and on and on and on” about Manny. Geez, Manny’s a head case and hasn’t hustled since Hector was a pup, but you made your point, Tim. Move on.

As for Joe–well, he’s not Jack.

  2. I listened to Jack for thirty years (brings back great memories of times with my dad). The combination of Harry and Jack has never been equaled. Unfortunately, Joe didn’t pick up Jack’s incredible insight into the game. Jack made me NOT want to watch the game on TV. Joe makes me want to watch the game on TV with the volume turned off.

  3. My favorite McCarverism from this year’s playoffs is when he informed us — and sounded as if we should be surprised by the fact — that innings where the pitcher allows a lead-off homerun are more likely to produce multi-run innings than innings where the pitcher issues a lead-off walk.

    Really, Tim?

  4. I honestly believe that baseball — the actual pitching and hitting and running and catching — bores Joe Buck to tears. Hence the endless blather — even beyond the required Fox promos. Maybe he really wanted to be a fire fighter or dentist when he grew up, but had to take over the old man’s business.

Jon Miller and Joe Morgan have been broadcasting the games on ESPN radio. Morgan doesn’t annoy me as he does some. Miller is about perfect.

I used to listen to Vin Scully when I lived in the L.A. area — and I didn’t even like the Dodgers. Scully was perfect.

Has been around since about 2004. I’ve even contributed to it. McCarver is a complete dolt. I mean, he had a long career. Can’t he even tell a colorful story from his days behind the dish!?!?!

And Joe Buck…ugh, don’t even get me started on that wooden excuse for an announcer. They are TERRIBLE and every year I’m shocked they get to come back and continue to call the game. I mean, there is action on the field and Buck is blathering on about something else, doesn’t stop, doens’t acknowledge.

    Grr!!!

  6. While we are on the subject I wish CBS would dump Phil Simms. He almost makes McCarver sound good.
