How many of America’s ten largest cities can you name?
By largest here I mean the 10 with the most residents in 2006 (Census estimates). And I mean in one city not in a metropolitan area that includes suburbs.
Would it help if I told you three of the ten have “San” in their name? Careful, it might not be the Sans you think.
Would it help if I told you that only three of the ten were also in the top ten in 1910?
The answer is in the first comment. How’d you do?
New York
Los Angeles
Chicago
Houston
Phoenix
Philadelphia
San Antonio
San Diego
Dallas
San Jose

Why did you limit your question to “one city,” to the exclusion of the metro area? It seems much more interesting and informative to talk about the size of a metro area, especially given that the distinction between the central city and its surrounding suburbs can often be arbitrary or nonexistent. For example, Phoenix proper is huge but most of it resembles a bunch of far-flung suburbs because there is no barrier to Phoenix’s annexation (unlike, for example, Denver’s ability to annex).
“Cuz thems the numbers I had.
I didn’t get San Jose, although I tried hard to think of a 3rd “San” that would fit. I got the rest.
I missed San Diego and Phnx, replacing them w/ Boston and San Fran. i do have the advantage of working in TV , so I can go by market size, more or less.

Thank you!
Got all 10 but not in any order. Would have never gotten Jose or Diego if you had not given the San clue though. And weren’t DFW and Houston 8th and 9th in the Metros just 6 years before?
