No, it’s not like Phoenix

NewMexiKen is struck by the number times people have revealed that they think summer weather in Albuquerque is Phoenix-like. This happened both to me and to a friend last week.

We’re a mile above sea level in Albuquerque folks. The hottest temperature so far this year was 100º on July 3rd. It was the first time we reached 100º officially in four years. (We haven’t even seen 90º since Saturday.)

By contrast, the high temperature in Phoenix has been more than 100º every day since June 13th.

  1. I would speculate that that Albuquerque weather is more similar to El Paso’s than to Phoenix’s. However, you’re still cooler (weatherwise) than we are–I know we’ve reached 100 degrees quite a few times this year.

  2. El Paso has hit 100º or higher 13 times in June and July.

Denver has hit 100º three times in June and July.

Tucson had 100º or better every day June 13-July 19, and 42 times altogether since May.

Las Vegas, Nevada, has been 100º or more every day since June 13, topping out at 116º on July 5th.

Phoenix has also reached 116º this month.

  3. And just because it’s a “dry heat” doesn’t mean that your face doesn’t melt and your hair catch on fire when you walk outside. HOWEVER, I’ll still take it over Orlando anyday.

  4. I wonder where they take the temperatures at Denver, Tuscon, Phoenix, etc. Because, working outside all day, I know that in the city, the temperature has been over 100 degrees numerous times this year. But since they take the temp out at the Sunport where it is several degrees cooler, it makes it seem like it isn’t quite as hot as it really is if you’re in the city.

Rio Rancho, where I reside, is even worse — they take the temperature readings at Double Eagle Airport, miles away from Rio Rancho.

  5. In Denver they take the official readings at DIA, which is quite a distance from downtown. It’s really crazy, because it means we show up as having snow or rain on days when we don’t experience any, and yes it usually does make for an official high a few degrees lower than what we experience downtown. On these hottest days, though, DIA seems to be about the same as downtown.

  6. I’m in Phx right now. Let me tell you right now, it’s nothing like Abq. It was like 100 degrees and raining. its horrid and miserable here.

    I miss Abq.
