Ken Jennings is invariably refered to as “Jeopardy Champion Ken Jennings,” however I would like to point out that Jennings first appeared on Jeopary right after they dropped their five-game limit. Before that all players were retired after winning five consecutive games.
We will never really know how far some other notable players may have gone.
But consider this; when Jennings was brought back for Jeopardy’s Tournament of Champions, and seeded into the final round, he was completely waxed by the other two players, who had run through all the tournament’s rounds.
Had Jennings been put into the first round with all the other players he may not have seen the second round. Too bad we’ll never know.
On the other hand, in the 2 years before Jennings when the champ could stay longer than five games, the record wins was eight. And in the 2½ years since Jennings the record is 19. Jennings’ streak was 74.
