A couple of nights ago I was watching a rerun of The Andy Griffith Show from about 1962 while I did a Sunday New York Times crossword puzzle. In the show, Andy was reluctantly forced by the town miser to deliver an eviction notice to a family that was behind in their mortgage. The payment that they couldn’t come up with– $52.50. The grand total to pay off the note– $780. And it was a pretty nice house, too.
