A friend of mine told me many years ago that a teaspoon of sugar stops hiccups. This is the only remedy that has worked. It is immediate and can last for hours. Sugar packets are easy to carry, too.
This remedy worked for NewMexiKen recently when everything else had failed.
It’s the only thing that works for me, too. I get those awful, painful hiccups and if they don’t go away after an hour or so, I resort to the sugar. Unfortunately only a huge, heaping spoonful will work…and as much as I like sugar, I don’t care for that quantity of sugar stuck in my throat. It’s one of those lesser of two evils decisions for me.
The only thing that ever works for me is drinking water upside down.
I wonder how sugar stops hiccups? I’ve always wondered.
My kids’ cure- swallow a teaspoon of sugar, take a deep breath and hold to the count of 10, while sticking a finger in each ear.
I am fascinated by the upside- down drinking, how does one do that?
The only thing that works for stubborn-old me (who gets the hiccups quite often) is if someone tells me I am faking it. They have to be very sincere and firm, but if they tell me I’m faking it and I try to prove that I’m not . . . my hiccups stop 9 out of 10 times. Being stubborn may have been a pain for NewMexiKen for years, but it helps me now!
My cousin’s wife told me a remedy that has worked for me and a lot of other hiccupers. While standing up, bend over at the waist and drink liquid from a glass by using a straw. The bending at the waist pushes on the diaphram, and the swallowing at the same time pushes out the air, I guess.
