CARMEL, Ind. — Colts coach Tony Dungy said he knows some people would prefer him to steer clear of the gay marriage debate, but he used a speech Tuesday night to clearly stake out his position.
Dungy told more than 700 people at the Indiana Family Institute’s banquet that he agrees with that organization’s position supporting a constitutional amendment that defines marriage as between one man and one woman.
“I appreciate the stance they’re taking, and I embrace that stance,” Dungy said.
Shut up Coach.
Well, he’s feeling pretty self righteous since (according to him) God chose his team to win the Super Bowl this year. I guess when God takes time out of his busy schedule to ensure your team a victory, you start thinking you’re a bit more important than you really are.
(All joking aside, it would behoove Dungy to consider focusing on family values a little closer to home – considering his teenage son attempted suicide more than once and eventually succeeded.)
Just FYI, there are a lot of local blogs (and others) here in Indiana taking the coach to task for those remarks. His remarks are being given extra weight due to SJR-7, presently making its way through the legislature:
ARTICLE 1 OF THE CONSTITUTION OF THE STATE OF INDIANA IS AMENDED BY ADDING A NEW SECTION TO READ AS FOLLOWS:
Section 38. (a) Marriage in Indiana consists only of the union of one man and one woman.
(b) This Constitution or any other Indiana law may not be construed to require that marital status or the legal incidents of marriage be conferred upon unmarried couples or groups.
Considering the brain drain in Indiana, adoption of this measure would send a clear signal to many creative people (both gay and straight) to stay away or move out of the state. There was testimony yesterday from major IN corporations (Cummins, Wellpoint) that it would seriously affect their recruiting efforts.
I rescued my dog Lulu from a humane society in Munster, IN. I’m very glad that’s all I ever did in Indiana.
Geez.
